The Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP) in Iraq is a landmark multi-energy initiative that combines natural gas, oil, solar power, and seawater treatment. Led by TotalEnergies (45%) with partners Basrah Oil Company (30%) and QatarEnergy (25%), the project aims to enhance Iraq's energy independence while reducing flaring and water stress in the Basra region. For EPC engineers, procurement managers, and inspectors, GGIP offers a complex example of integrated infrastructure requiring careful planning, specification, and quality assurance across diverse piping and water systems.
Project Overview and Scope
According to TotalEnergies' official project page, GGIP comprises four sub-projects:
- Associated Gas Upstream Development (AGUP): Redevelopment of the Ratawi field to increase oil production capacity to 120,000 barrels per day (b/d) in phase 1 and 210,000 b/d in phase 2.
- Ar-Ratawi Gas Midstream Project (GMP): Recovery and processing of flared gas from multiple oil fields, with pipeline transport to local power plants.
- Common Seawater Supply Project (CSSP): Construction of a seawater treatment plant between Khor Zubair and Umm Qasr, capable of treating 5 million barrels of water per day in phase 1, with pipelines to five oil fields.
