Why this matters
Incoterms 2020, published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), are the international rulebook for who pays for what, when risk transfers, and which party arranges insurance. For pipe fitting imports from China, four terms cover ~90% of business: FOB, CFR, CIF (sea-only), and DAP (any mode). Misusing FOB for a containerised shipment, or assuming CIF includes full-value insurance, is the most common cause of disputes when cargo is damaged or delayed. This guide explains Incoterms 2020 for fittings export so buyers and sellers price the same scope.
Incoterms 2020 give a shared vocabulary across the FOB, CFR, CIF and DAP options that fittings buyers actually use.
Term-by-term comparison
FOB — Free On Board (sea / inland waterway only).
- Seller's job: deliver goods on board the vessel at the named port of shipment.
- Risk transfer: when goods are placed on board.
- Buyer pays: ocean freight, insurance, destination port charges, customs.
- Suitable for: bulk cargo, breakbulk, RoRo. ICC notes FOB is technically inappropriate for containers handed over at the terminal (FCA is preferred), but in practice FOB Tianjin / FOB Shanghai remains the most-quoted term in China steel trade.
CFR — Cost and Freight (sea / inland waterway only).
- Seller's job: pay ocean freight to the named destination port.
- Risk transfer: same as FOB — when goods are on board the vessel at origin.
- Buyer pays: insurance, destination charges, customs.
- Suitable for: buyers who want one less negotiation but want their own marine insurance.
CIF — Cost, Insurance and Freight (sea / inland waterway only).
- Seller's job: pay freight + minimum insurance to destination port.
- Risk transfer: same as FOB / CFR (on board at origin).
- Insurance: ICC mandates only the minimum cover (Institute Cargo Clauses C) under CIF. ICC Clause C covers a limited list of named perils (fire, vessel sinking, collision, jettison) and is rarely enough for steel pipe fittings shipped to humid ports.
- Suitable for: buyers who want a bundled price but need to verify insurance level.
DAP — Delivered at Place (any mode).
- Seller's job: deliver goods to the named destination, ready for unloading.
- Risk transfer: at the named destination, before unloading.
- Buyer pays: import customs clearance and duties; unloading.
- Suitable for: door delivery to a project site or warehouse where the seller controls inland transport.
Common buyer mistakes
- Using FOB on a containerised PO and then arguing about damages that occurred in the terminal yard before loading — under FOB the seller's risk ends only when goods are on board the vessel.
- Buying CIF and assuming damage in transit is fully covered, when only ICC Clause C minimum cover applies.
- Confusing DAP (unloading by buyer) with DPU (Delivered at Place Unloaded — unloading by seller).
- Writing "FOB China" without a named port — Incoterms require the named place.
- Using DDP from a non-experienced seller; the seller may not have an import-of-record entity in the buyer's country.
Buyer checklist
- [ ] Term + named place written in full (e.g., "FOB Tianjin Xingang")
- [ ] Reference to "Incoterms 2020" stated on PO and invoice
- [ ] For CIF: confirm whether ICC A (all-risks) is required and quoted accordingly
- [ ] For DAP: confirm who pays unloading at site
- [ ] Insurance value > CIF + 10% (industry default)
- [ ] Port congestion surcharges agreed up front
- [ ] Demurrage / detention liability clear
Sample PO clauses
FOB: "FOB Tianjin Xingang per Incoterms 2020. Seller delivers goods on board nominated vessel by 30 June 2026. Risk passes to buyer when goods are on board."
CIF: "CIF Houston per Incoterms 2020. Seller arranges marine insurance per ICC (A) clauses for 110% of CIF value, naming buyer as insured."
DAP: "DAP Buyer Warehouse, 4500 Industrial Drive, Houston TX per Incoterms 2020. Buyer responsible for import clearance, duties, and unloading."
